Buying an Umrah package for your parents in Morocco

This guide is for the son or daughter who pays, often from Europe, the Gulf or another Moroccan city, while the parents travel. The package is the same document anyone else receives. What changes is that the people who will live the trip are not the ones reading the small print, and the one reading it will not be at the agency counter to ask follow-up questions. So the questions have to be asked before the first payment, and the answers kept in writing.

Which package lines matter most for older parents?

The same lines as for anyone, read with a different question in mind: how much walking, carrying and waiting will this mean for them? A package that suits a fit couple in their thirties can be hard going for parents who tire quickly, take medication at fixed times or have never flown alone.

Four lines deserve more attention than the price:

  • The room and the hotel. Where they sleep is where they rest between visits to the mosque, so the floor, the lift and the number of people sharing the room count for more than a star rating.
  • The transfers. Every change of place means bags, stairs and waiting. The package should say who handles each one.
  • The people around them. Who travels with the group, who your parents call if they are lost or unwell, and who can speak for them at the hotel desk.
  • The flow of information. You will want to know when they land, where they are staying and if anything changes. That only happens if the package or the contract says who tells you.

The rest of the package still has to be read: the seller, the flight, the nights in each city, what is included. Reading an Umrah package line by line takes you through every line; this page adds the questions that matter when the travellers are your parents.

Room, floors and transfers: what should you get in writing?

The hotel. Ask for the exact name of each hotel, in Makkah and in Madinah. If the package writes “or similar”, ask what happens if the hotel changes: will you be told before departure, and can you refuse? Distance is a separate question. The package may state a distance to the mosque; ask how it was measured and whether there are slopes or steps on the way, because a short distance on paper is not always a short walk for an older person.

The room. Ask how many people share it. A price per person in a quad room is a different trip from the same price in a double, and older parents who are used to their own space may sleep badly in a room of four. Ask for the floor, whether there is a lift, and whether your parents can be in the same room or next to each other if they are travelling with a group of men and women.

The transfers. There are at least three: airport to hotel, the journey between the two cities, and hotel to airport at the end. For each one, ask whether it is by coach, car or train, whether it is included in the price, and who carries the luggage. If the package writes the train, note that the Haramain High Speed Railway is an electrified line of about 450 km between Makkah and Madinah, with 5 stations3. A train still means getting to the station and from the station to the hotel: ask who handles that part and the bags.

The flight times. A night arrival followed by an early start is tiring at any age. Ask for the flight times as soon as they are known, and for the time of the first transfer after landing.

Put all of this in one message to the seller and ask for one written reply. The inclusions checklist gives you the full list of services to mark as included, excluded or not written.

Is insurance included?

According to Gulf News, citing the ministry, insurance is mandatory for Umrah pilgrims from abroad and is included in the visa fees5. According to Gulf News, citing the ministry, that insurance covers medical emergencies, accidents, death and flight delays or cancellations, among others5.

What we do not know is how far that cover goes for an older traveller with an existing condition, or how a claim is made in practice. So ask the seller for the policy document, or at least for the name of the insurer and an emergency number, and give a copy to your parents and keep one yourself. If the package offers a second insurance, ask what it adds, and whether it covers a cancellation before departure, which the entry insurance is not described as covering in our source.

Health rules are a separate check from the package. According to the Saudi Ministry of Health's official document for Umrah 1447 (2026), everyone coming to perform Umrah must be vaccinated against meningococcal disease, at least 10 days before arrival; the document for the 1448 season was not found7. Talk to your parents' doctor about it, and about the trip itself, well before the departure date.

Who accompanies them?

We have found no source that says who travels with an Umrah group from Morocco, or how many travellers one group leader looks after. That makes it a question for the package, not something to assume.

Ask the seller, in writing:

  • Does a group leader travel with the group from Morocco, or does someone meet them in Saudi Arabia?
  • What is that person's name or role, and what number can your parents call, day and night?
  • Does that person speak your parents' language, Darija, Amazigh or French?
  • Who helps if one of them needs a wheelchair, a doctor or a change of room?

If one parent travels alone, ask whether they will share a room with strangers, and how the seller arranges that. If both travel, ask whether they stay together for the whole trip, transfers included.

How can you check the seller from abroad?

You do not need to be in Morocco to check who is selling. The Ministry of Tourism publishes the travel-agency directory, including the lists of ODV and DV agencies licensed under Law 11-16, on mtaess.gov.ma1. Look for the exact company name printed on the package, not the brand name used on social media. If the two differ, ask the seller to explain the link in writing. The licence check on agenceomra.ma walks you through the search.

Do this before the first payment, not after: once the money has left your account, the check can only tell you what you are up against.

A disclosure belongs here. Wiki Tours International, which publishes this site, has its own Umrah brand, Bab Makka. Apply these checks to our publisher too, Bab Makka included: the company name in the official directory, a dated written package and receipts in the right names.

Two more remote checks help. Ask for the seller's office address and a landline, then ask a relative in Morocco to visit or call. And ask for the package as a dated document, not only as a WhatsApp image: a document with the seller's name and the date is what you will rely on later.

Paying for someone else: what should the paperwork show?

When the payer and the traveller are different people, the papers should make both visible. Ask for:

  • The contract in your parents' names, as travellers, with the dates and the package as written.
  • Each receipt naming the payer, the travellers it applies to, the amount and the date.
  • A written statement of who the seller will contact about changes: you, your parents, or both.
  • Copies of everything sent to both of you, so your parents are not left with nothing in hand at the airport.

Payment terms deserve the same care as the trip itself. Deposits and payment plans explained covers the deposit, the instalments and the balance date. If you have received more than one package, the comparison tool sets them side by side on the same terms, in your browser, without keeping anything.

If something goes wrong, disputes between pilgrims and agencies are first settled amicably through the delegations of the Ministry of Tourism8. The ministry also routes complaints to the national complaints portal, where you can file a complaint with the Tourism department, track it with its reference and an e-mail address, and reopen it if the answer is not satisfactory9. An online complaint can be followed from abroad, which helps when you are the one who paid.

Do the package dates fit the season?

The right moment depends on your parents' health and wishes more than on any offer, but the season has fixed limits: for the Umrah 1448 season, the last entry is on 23 March 2027 and the last departure on 7 April 20276. If they hope to travel at the end of Ramadan, make sure the package dates fall inside those limits, and that the payment schedule leaves time for the travel file.

You can send the package your parents received, as it is written. Say who is travelling and anything the seller should know about their needs.

What remains unclear

  • We have no source on rules for who accompanies an Umrah group from Morocco, or on how many pilgrims one group leader looks after.
  • We do not know the limits of the Umrah entry insurance for older travellers or for existing conditions, nor how a claim is handled in practice.
  • No source in our register describes the help available to older or less mobile pilgrims at hotels or during transfers.
  • We have no sourced rule on a payer who lives abroad and pays for someone else's package, including the currency and the receipts.

Your questions on this line

Can I buy the package from abroad while my parents sign in Morocco?

Ask the seller first. Then ask in writing whose name goes on the contract, whose name goes on each receipt, and who they will contact if something changes. We have no sourced rule on this point, so the written answer is what counts.

My parents are not comfortable with apps. Is that a problem?

It is a reason to ask who handles the steps for them. Ask the seller who takes care of the travel file, who keeps copies of the documents, and how your parents can reach someone during the trip by a plain phone call.

Does the package cover my parents if they fall ill in Saudi Arabia?

According to Gulf News, citing the ministry, the insurance for Umrah pilgrims from abroad is included in the visa fees and covers medical emergencies, among other risks5. We do not know its limits for older travellers, so ask the seller for the policy document.
